Arrival by coach

You can travel by coach between the two cities. Travelling time is approximately 3-4 hours, terminal to terminal and depending on traffic conditions. Although the highway between Shanghai and Hangzhou is safe and up to international standards, it is still recommended to travel by train as it is cheaper, has longer operational hours and higher service frequency.

Nonetheless if you choose to go by coach, do travel in the day or between 8am to 8pm as it is safer and more convenient.

From Shanghai to Hangzhou

You can travel to Hangzhou by coach that departs from Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), which is 30 kilometers southeast of downtown Shanghai.

From Pudong International Airport to downtown Hangzhou

Departing times of the coaches are 9:30am, 10:50am, 12:00am, 1:30pm, 3:30pm, 3:30pm, 5:30pm, and 7:30pm. Fares are at 100 yuan. The ticket office is at Arrival Exit No. 6-7 and No. 8-9 at Terminal 1. Service hotline: +86 21 68345743. It is more convenient than the second way.

From Shanghai Railway Station and Shanghai South Railway Station

There are long distance coach services from these two stations to downtown Hangzhou.

From Hangzhou to Shanghai

There are 5 Hangzhou coach terminals namely north, south, east and west and Jiu Bao Long Distance Coach Station (a new terminal), depending on which part of China you are planning to go.

From Jiu Bao Long Distance Coach Station (九堡长途客运中心) to Shanghai

Coaches from this terminal go to Suzhou, Shanghai and other places as well. There are shuttle services to the other terminals that provide coaches to other parts of China. You can buy tickets to your next destination at the ticket office in Jiu Bao before taking the shuttle bus to the other terminals. The ticket office and the waiting lobby are on the second floor.

** Do note that the coach terminals in Hangzhou are mostly at the outskirts of the city. If your accommodation is in center of the city, it would be ideal to take the train as Hangzhou Railway Station is most central.
