HANGZHOU began to take several measures to reduce traffic jams at the West Lake Scenic Area today. The measures will be put in place every weekend until May 31.

The measures coincide with the city's spring tourist season, which runs from March 1 to May 31 this year, the traffic police department said.

Cars are restricted in the scenic area on weekends from 8:30am to 5pm, based on their license plate numbers. On odd dates, cars with odd numbered plates can enter the area while cars with even numbered plates are only permitted on even dates. This applies to all cars except those carrying more than four passengers.

Some roads will temporarily allow only one-way traffic at the weekends.

On the south side of West Lake, from 8:30am to 5pm every Saturday and Sunday through the spring tourist season, Nanshan Road and Hupao Road, Lianhuafeng Road, Yuhuangshan Road and Jiuyaoshan city tunnel will only permit one-way moving traffic.

At the same time, restrictions will be in place on the north side of West Lake. Vehicles will only be able to move in one-way direction on Lingyin Road and Longjing Road.

One-way traffic will be adopted in Hubin Commercial Area for the first time, covering Dongpo Road, Hubin Road, Nanshan Road, Kaiyuan Road, Yan'an Road from 4pm to 10pm on Friday, 12am to 10pm on Saturday and 12am to 9pm on Sunday.

These restrictions will affect numerous bus routes including numbers 7, 27, 25, 12, 78, 102 and 809 as well as tourist routes of Y1 and Y2.
